Why are woman choosing un assisted birth?

Unassisted birth, more commonly known on social media as freebirth, is a topic that is gaining significant attention and discussion. This refers to a woman choosing to give birth at home without the presence of registered medical professionals such as midwives or doctors. Instead, she may be supported by her partner, family members, close friends, a doula or a birthkeeper. In some cases, women may choose to birth completely alone.

At the heart of most freebirths is the desire for complete autonomy over the birth experience. Many women who choose this path do so intentionally, often after extensive research and deep personal reflection. For them, birthing without medical intervention can be a powerful, empowering and transformative experience. It is not a decision that is made lightly.

Unfortunately, mainstream media often presents unassisted birth in a negative light, focusing primarily on the potential risks while failing to recognise the reasons why many women feel drawn to this option. In reality, those planning a freebirth are usually well informed and thoroughly prepared. They understand how to handle situations that can be safely managed at home and are also aware of when it is necessary to call for professional medical assistance.

It is important to highlight that unassisted birth should always be a choice, not a last resort. No woman should feel that she has no other option due to a lack of access to midwifery care, financial barriers or previous traumatic experiences within the healthcare system. Sadly, for some women, freebirth becomes the only viable path, even if it is not one they would have otherwise chosen. This can lead to birthing in a space that feels unsafe or unsupported, simply because no better alternative was available.

Choosing where and how to give birth is one of the most significant decisions you will make during your pregnancy. Whether you choose a hospital birth, a birth centre, a home birth with a midwife, or a freebirth, it is essential that your choice comes from an informed and empowered place. Every woman deserves access to safe, respectful and supportive care during pregnancy and birth, without fear or judgment.
